Edwardson Cup

Backworth Welfare retained their title with a 13 shot win over Fossway this afternoon (Sun 9th July) at Ponteland B.C. In their quest to lift the title for the first time Fossway could not have made a worse start, trailing by 21 shots to 4 after only 4-ends. Not down hearted though, they fought their way back into the game and with only 4-ends remaining they had cut the deficit to 5 shots. Backworth then rallied and scored 7 shots across the board to secure the title for a seventh time.

BE National Championships

Northumberland's hopes of success in the Junior Singles ended this morning (Sat 19th Aug) when both representatives were defeated in the opening round, and both by the tightest of margins 21-20. Gosforth's Josh Minto lost out to Gary Brock (Kent) and Jack was beaten by Jerry Rumball (Hertfordshire).

Hexham Elvaston's Brian Norman, Keith Woods, Darren Cooper & Malcolm Cooper are in action in the Fours tomorrow, a preliminary round tie against Warwickshire B. Northumberland's other quartet of Josh Minto, Simon Richardson, Craig Cooper & Chris Yeomans are in action on Monday against Buckinghamshire. Much is expected of the Gosforth rink in these championships, but they will be tested in a difficult first round tie.

Results to date are as follows:

Middleton Cup

Northumberland's good run and hopes of success in this event for the first time since 1988 ended this morning (Sat 5th August) when they were defeated by Devon (113-95) in the Semi-Finals at Royal Leamington Spa.

Northumberland started well and led by 7 shots at 5 ends and by 6 shots at 10 ends. Over the next 5 ends Devon started to live up to their favourites tag and moved into the lead by 6 shots at 15 ends. The game was lost over the next few ends when Devon moved further clear and led by 25 shots at 18 ends. Despite a spirited fight to the end Northumberland could not halt Devon's progress and their third successive final appearance.

County Championship Finals (Mens)

The prestigious Singles crown was won for a second time by Backworth's Paul Ging (BW), the first coming back in 1999, with a 21-6 win over Gary Lambert (FS). In the Pairs Internationals Josh Minto & Chris Yeomans (G) held on to their title with victory over clubmates Peter Duffy & M McGreevy. Minto & Yeomans then teamed up with Simon Richardson and Craig Cooper to win the Fours title with a 42-8 thrasing of Darren Cooper & Co (HX).

Fresh from their Edwardson Cup success a week earlier, Backworth Welfare have added the Challenge Cup with victory at Alnwick. Jubilee Cup

Benfield and Ponteland came face to face in the last match of this year's final with the winners guaranteed to lift the trophy, a drawn game would have been sufficient for Benfield to succeed. 1st - Benfield 6pts +16

2nd - Ponteland 4pts +2

3rd - Newbiggin B 2pts +1
