Backworth Retain Challenge

Backworth Welfare started their defence well by winning their games on both rinks before lunch. After the "double header", which was the 3rd game of the day the 3 clubs winning were Backworth, Crawford Park and Gosforth Empire. After the 4th game Backworth were still in control, as both of their rinks were still undefeated during the day. However, going into the final game Gosforth Empire and Crawford Park still had a chance but Gosforth Empire had to overturn a 6 shot deficit against Backworth. Gosforth Empire nearly did this but only won by 5 shots. This meant the cup was not only heading but being retained by Backworth Welfare, the team went through the whole day with a 100% points record. Gosforth Empire's defeat meant Crawford Park took the runners up spot on shots difference (as both teams finished on 6 points - with Crawford Park on +11 shots compared to Gosforth Empire's +9 shots).

A huge congratualtions goes to the Backworth Welfare Club - the team comprised of Mat Raftree, Michael London, Andy Johnson Snr, Ian Brown (skip), Roy Goldsmith, Fred Short, Peter Dawson, Jonny Morgan (skip).

Finally a thank you to the host club of Alnwick BC, along with County Administrator George Batey and Umpire (and also President) Jim Holmes; along with all competing players, clubs and supporters - many thanks.
