Middleton Cup

The Middleton Cup is a National Cup Competition run by Bowls England and is open to all County associations which are members of Bowls England. All entrants are placed in geographical groups, which will remain the same, but the composition of the sections will be determined by a draw made every second year. The competition is divided into two stages – the Group Stages and the Final Stages. In the Group Stages each county shall play one match each year against each other County in their section, home and away alternate years or at a neutral venue for both years.

The winners of each group will qualify for the quarter-finals with this game taking place on a nuetral venue. The winners of those ties will qualify for the Final stages being played on the first Saturday of the National Championships at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

Northumberland have won the Middleton Cup on six occasions since the competition began in 1922, with their most recent success coming back in 1988. In our more recent history we have qualified for the quarter-finals on four occasions in the last 7-years, and qualified for the semi-finals in 2017 (first time in 29 years).

Muras / Alsop Cup

These Ccompetitions are run by the Northern Counties Bowling Association.Northumberland have won the Muras Cup on 31 occasions - our earliest in 1936 and the most recent in 2017. Northumberland have won The Alsop Cup 26 times again our earliest success was in 1949 with our most recent in 2009.

Balcomb Trophy

The Balcomb Trophy is a National Competition run by Bowls England with each team consisting of 2 rinks of 4 players, this competition replaced the 'County Top Four' competition. Northumberland never won the 'Top Four' event despite coming close on a number of occasions, they have however won the Balcomb trophy with that success coming in 2012, and runner up in 2016.

White Rose Trophy

Another National run competion by Bowls England for Under 25s with each team consisting of 2 rinks of 4 players. Northumberland have been successful in this event, defeating Cornwall in the Final at Worthing in 2000. The nearest we have come since is the semi-finals in 2014.

Northumberland's records of success in other International - National and Northern Counties competitions will be recorded elsewhere on this site as the site is developed.
